5th Grade Science EOG Review Materials (NEW for 2015-2016)
This document uses the Science Olympiad It's Elementary approach of stations to engage students in reviewing key concepts that they need to know to be successful on the 5th Grade Science EOG. Students can work in teams of two, or individually, to have 2-3 minutes at each station to answer the questions, before rotating to another station. student friendly explanation of why temperature decreases
with altitude. I answered, but also posted question to the NSTA
Elementary Listserve and received several excellent ideas teachers
'can use to help 5th grade students better understand concepts such as temperature, air pressure, heat energy and heat transfer. 5.P.3.

This is a "beta version" of a checklist, and I need feedback to fine-tune the scoring so it reflects actual performance of your students. ANCHOR CHARTS to help with 5th Grade Science EOG Review

If your students can answer these 16 questions correctly, they will likely be at or above grade level on the EOG. Recommend students answer these questions individually --- give them 15 minute --- and then go over each question as a whole class review.

It is recommended that these assessments be used as benchmarks after you finish teaching an essential standard.
If you use these assessments, have your students use the student code to access if you administer the assessment on-line. There is NO need to COPY the assessment and reassign to your students.

NOTE: The released EOG in the above table is the one I recommended teachers use at the start of the year in September as a pre-assessment of students’ understanding of essential standards.
About 15 schools administered that version of the EOG, representing 1081 students, about 10% of our 5th grade student population. The district trend for that aggregated data is as follows:

5.P.3 Energy and Heat Transfer 36.2%
5.E.1 Earth Science and Weather 30.4%
5.L.1 Living Organisms 44.7%

What this data means? …. These are very good numbers at the start of the year! Using the SQRTx10 (square root x 10) method, the data indicates students have a fairly good grasp of force and motion concepts, ecosystems, and genetics and will likely be at or above grade level when they take the EOG in May. The more challenging concepts are 5.E.1 (weather) and 5.P.3 (Energy and Heat Transfer).

It is HIGHLY recommended that all 5th grade students take a Mock EOG before May 6th and that teachers use SchoolNet Assessment 1029363 to administer that EOG. That data will give you detailed information for what you need to do to position your students for success on the EOG.

For example, if any % correct score for any individual essential standard is below 50%, those concepts should be retaught and reviewed. If the % correct score is greater than 60%, your students will likely perform at or above grade level on the EOG.

EOG-Like Review Questions Created Using Problem Attic.

Problem Attic is simply one of the best test generators for science and math available to classroom teachers. The public version is FREE although you do need to sign up for an account. The site is very teacher friendly, easy to learn, and best of all, the questions are from reliable sources such as the New York Regents, TEKS, NAEP, etc. Following are several Problem Attic assessments created by Wayne Fisher for teachers to use with their students.

This is a SchoolNet common assessment created to for objectives 5.P.1.1, 5.P.1.2, 5.P.1.3, and 5.P.1.4. There are 5 questions for each objective and the questions have been chosen to range in difficulty from easier to medium to harder. This is the pdf version of a 54Q assessment for the physical science objectives for 5th grade. There are six questions for each of the nine objectives ( 5.P.1.1, 5.P.1.2, 5.P.1.3, 5.P.1.4, 5.P.2.1,5.P.2.2, 5.P.2.3, 5.P.3.1, 5.P.3.2). Students scoring 0-2 could be considered to be performing at Level I/II; students answering 3 questions correctly have partially mastered the objective; students with correct answers to 4-6 questions are performing at the Level III/IV.
