Science Kit Activities for 2013-2014
Here are hands-on activities for second grade science that align with the Essential Standards. New kits will be phased in over the next three years starting with kits this Fall. Teachers should continue to use materials from the McGraw-Hill kits to supplement hands-on science for our students.

  • tie a string around kids fingers and tie it to a wire hanger or metal spoons and have them bang it against a desk.

  • Students take pictures of items – sort into solids and liquids
  • Make Jell-O using a hot pot
  • Use cheerios to create close solids, more spread out liquids, and gasses on construction paper
  • use their bodies to act like the solids/liquids/gasses
  • Baking soda/balloon
  • See if an older third grade teacher has the unit from former books
  • make fossils with Plaster of Paris and water
  • Cornstarch and water – oobleck (use a Dr. Seuss book – Bartholomew and the Oobleck) also on youtube. Type in Ellen Digenerous.
  • Gas from a soda can into a piece of aluminum foil
  • take a potato, cut it in half and pour hydrogen peroxide – it forms a gas
  • melt crayons – solids to liquids, then they hardened again. Can use a toaster oven.
  • Make rock candy – starts as a liquid – google how to make the rock candy
  • Borax and hot water – makes snowflakes – use pipe cleaners to form shapes – will take a few days to crystallize
  • take water, die it a different color, put a glass with a paper towel in it and push it in the water – the towel does not get wet.
  • Jeopardy – smart board express website
  • sink or float experiments
  • Balloons – put two balloons on a ruler like a balance scale, let one of the balloons deflate
  • Jell-O powder, drop water (tap water) droplets, makes kind of a gumdrop – use a plastic fork to pick it up. (Do it at the end of the day because kids get hyper)
  • Hand out five or so liquids. Have them do the five senses (minus the tasting!). They can compare the liquids. Then mix all of the liquids together and compare weights.
  • What’s the Matter in Mr. Whiskers Room? Read aloud – there are different experiments in it.
  • Fishing for ice cubes – ice cubes in a bowl of water. Lay a string on top of the ice cube. Sprinkle salt – the string attaches.
