The following documents are handouts from the 2016-2017 5th Grade Science Alliance for Hard to Teach EOG Science Concepts. More will be added as the Alliance continues to meet on the 3rd Tuesday of each month from 4:30-6:00 at First Ward ES. While it is possible to adapt these activities for your students without attending an Alliance meeting, the real added value to help you increase student achievement levels and to meet or exceed growth on the 5th Grade Science EOG is by physically attending the Alliance meeting. The networking and exchange of ideas to help students master the 5th Grade Science EOG at the meeting is a key ingredient to maximize student achievement on the EOG. Some schools have found it helped to have a different teacher attend an Alliance each month and then share what they learn.

Below is information from previous years Science Alliances to give you an idea of the variety of sessions that were offered to teachers to impact their practice and increase student learning through science.

Featured Alliance Meeting from September 15th ----- Humpty Dumpty STEM for preK Teachers ---- Rama Road.
This Alliance was organized by Martha Huxster, Cindy Davis, and Jill Pereira. They documented their activities with a PowerPoint slide show which can be viewed using the link below.

The Alliance is an exemplar for what we are trying to accomplish with the Elementary Science Alliance initiative. When we cut to the chase, what we need to focus on is the CORE --- teachers, students, curriculum. The Humpty Dumpty Alliance shared an engaging activity that will impact teacher practice and increase student learning about STEM. Congratulations to Martha, Cindy, and Jill for their willingness to lead that Alliance and share their practice with colleagues.

This PowerPoint documents the preK STEM Alliance hosted by the teachers at Rama Road.

This page contains information about the 2015-2016 Elementary Science Alliance.

Dear Teachers,

Here are the locations and times for the Elementary Science Alliances for 2015-2016.
The course will be posted on MyTalent soon, but to let the host teachers know you plan to attend please register for the Alliance using the links to SignUP Genius for each session.

The purpose of the Elementary Science Alliance is to create an opportunity for classroom teachers from different schools to meet face-to-face once a month to collaborate and share ideas to excite students about science.
The theme of this year's Alliance is "Science and Literacy". There are 20 Alliances at present, but few for K-3 grade level teachers, aside from the Best Practice sessions that span multi-grade levels.

If you are a teacher in grades preK-3 and would like to host an Alliance at your school, there is information on the Elementary Science Wiki page for the Science Alliances, or simply email me at w.fisher@cms.k12.nc.us.

The school-based Science Alliances are the primary means for classroom teachers to receive professional development for science.

The purpose of the Elementary Science Alliance is to create opportunities for grade level classroom teachers as well as elementary science lab teachers/facilitators to meet once a month to share ideas to excite students about learning through science.

To maximize participation by teachers there are Elementary Science Alliance meetings are scheduled throughout the district. There are nine Alliances - preK, K,1,2,3,4,5, Lab teacher/facilitator, and Best Practice. Teachers register on MyTalent (directions to be shared later for how to do this) for a specific Alliance, but they may attend any alliance meeting for credit.

Meetings for the 2015-2016 school year will be at host schools the third Tuesday of the months: 9/15, 10/20, 11/17, 12/15, 1/19, 2/15 (3-hour meeting on Curriculum Day), 3/15, 04/25 (3 hour meeting on Curriculum Day), and 05/17. The times for Alliance meetings vary; please check the table before driving to an Alliance meeting.

Each meeting is planned for 90 minutes with a 15 minute "Update on Elementary Science in CMS" followed by a 75 minute session determined by the host teacher. That session may be a make-and-take, looking at student work, sharing of common assessments, or other best instructional strategy to impact teacher practice and student learning in science. The Focus of this year's Science Alliance meetings will be Science and Literacy.__

Anyone may host an Alliance! Interested? Here are the duties of the host teacher ...

1) Let your principal know you want to take a more active role in leadership in CMS and ask permission to host an Alliance at your school.
2) Email Wayne Fisher at w.fisher@cms.k12.nc.us and ask that your school to be included as Science Alliance site. Fill out the Google Form to Host an Alliance Meeting.
3) Talk up the Alliance with your colleagues at your school and neighboring schools if appropriate. You want to try to build your Alliance to about 8-10 members.
4) Plan a one-hour program for each meeting -- this is not as intimidating as it sounds. Share the things you enjoy doing most in elementary science. Ask other
members of your Alliance to contribute ideas. Programming may include a favorite activity, make-and-takes, looking at student work, investigating science resources
on the internet, guest speakers, etc. Do keep a focus on RAW Science! - Reading and Writing in Science as that will be this year's theme for the Alliance.
5) Let Wayne know in about 25-50 words what you plan to do at your meeting. He will advertise the Alliances on the Wiki and Listserves and help promote attendance.
6) The day of the meeting, meet and greet the teachers, share an Update on Elementary Science in CMS (will be posted here on the wiki), facilitate your program, take
attendance (form below), send attendance to Wayne Fisher Courier #839, Room 506 or fax 980 343 5011, so teachers get credit on MyTalent.
7) As host you should also sign-up on MyTalent for your Alliance.

Here are some documents to help plan school-based, Science Alliance Meetings

Sample Agenda for Host Teachers.

Attendance - needed to receive credit. Fax to Wayne Fisher, 980 343 5011 or courier #839, room 506.

Update Elementary Science in CMS ---- November 18th, 2014

REGISTRATION is now OPEN for the 2014-2015 Elementary Science Alliance! It is Course # 747. Go to MyTalent to register.

1. Elementary Science Kits --- New science kits and replacement kits have been delivered to all CMS schools. Schools received one kit and one refill kit for every five teachers and two kits and refills if there were 8 or more teachers at a grade level. Although each kit and refill kit can serve 30 students each, that is NOT enough science material for every student to have a hands-on experience in science UNLESS the kits are supplemented with existing science materials at the schools from the old kits. Schools that have consolidated all of their older science kits to group common materials together should have an adequate supply of materials. New Science Kits and Refills are part of a Special Textbook Inventory maintained by the textbook department. If you need additional science kits, please ask your textbook contact at your school to submit a requisition for new kits to the textbook office.
2. Science Olympiad It's Elementary! This year's tournament will held June 6th at UNC Charlotte. We are planning a Coaches Clinic on Saturday, January 27th, at Newell ES from 8:00 - 12:00 for any school planning to enter one or more teams in this year's competition. Schools sponsoring a team for the first time can request the STEM Department to pay the cost of registering a team on the NSCO website. This is a great program to build excitement for STEM at your school!

Here are the Locations and Times for the Elementary Science Alliance Meetings for Friday, January 23rd
The Alliances are open to any CMS teacher who is interested in learning more about science content and how to teach that content using best practices.
Teachers need only sign up for ONE Alliance on MyTalent, but may attend ANY Alliance for contact hours and CEUs.

MAKE-UP OPTIONS for ELEMENTARY SCIENCE ALLIANCE MEETINGS
Here are three make-up options for teachers who are unable to attend one or more regularly scheduled Alliance Meetings.

1. Complete any one section of the Customized Curriculum Topic Study Guides found on the North Carolina NCDPI Science Wiki. Here is the link to those guides ...
NCDPI Curriculum Topic Select a topic that interests you and you would like to learn more about. Open the Curriculum Guide and complete one section of your choosing. Reflect on what you learn and post your response to the prompt to the discussion thread on this page. (Click on the number next to the EDIT button above to access the Discussion Board).

2. Visit the NASA Education Page and locate two NASA resources or activities that you would like to try with your students. Download the activity or resource and use with your students. Reflect on your experience and post your reflection on the Discussion Board.

3. Visit the Layered Curriculum Page and browse sample lessons for your grade level. Choose an essential standard for elementary science for your grade level and create a short Layered Curriculum for how that standard could be taught in your classroom. No need to polish or to use the Layered Curriculum with your students; for credit email your DRAFT curriculum to w.fisher@cms.k12.nc.us. Note, there is a Layered Curriculum example for a 2nd grade unit on weather developed by a CMS teacher on the Resource page of this wiki.

4. Let's Make a Deal! For this option, propose an activity that you would like to do as a make-up assignment. The activity needs to focus on increasing your content knowledge in elementary science or how to teach that content to your students. Examples of activities may include, but are not limited to, webinars from NASA or NSTA, a book study, visiting a colleague's class to observe science lessons, etc. email your "deal" to w.fisher@cms.k12.nc.us for approval. It is expected that what you propose, you will do.

If you would like to host an Alliance Meeting at your school, email w.fisher@cms.k12.nc.us for more details
